There is no known cure for osteoarthritis as of now, orthopedic experts say, affirming that continuous research has been done by different groups all with the hope of finding cure for the joint disease. However, a topical gel is making rounds now as a good way to ease the pain from osteoarthritis. This medical condition  causes joint pain and stiffness among others. Almost 27 million Americans have osteoarthritis and one in two people will develop the disease in their lifetime, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Others may think this is just a minor disorder and can just be shaken off when in fact it is not. Every year, around 632,000 joint replacement operations are performed due to osteoarthritis using artificial hips such as Stryker ABG II and Rejuvenate hip implants.

There are many other ways to manage osteoarthritis. Your doctor will prescribe you pain relievers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for reduction of inflammation, or a shot of steroids for faster relief. You may also opt for natural ways such as exercising to strengthen muscles, physiotherapy, losing weight if you are on the heavy side to reduce strain on the joints, and foods that have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

On the other hand, a new study suggests that a topical therapy called Flexiseq that does not contain a topical anti-inflammatory drug may help manage osteoarthritis pain and in turn improve mobility. Around 1,300 patients participated in the study. They applied the topical gel twice daily for 12 weeks and the results were impressive.

This topical treatment is an aqueous gel filled with nano-sized spheres known as "sequessome vesicles,"  which in turn are bursting with phospholipids, similar to those found in the lubricating synovial fluid in joints.

Some of the significant findings include a 39.8 percent reduction in pain, easy application as it is topical which is good for those having difficulty in swallowing oral medications, enhanced joint mobility, and fewer or no side effects at all as it does not have any pharmaceutically active ingredients. This is actually good news for people afflicted with osteoarthritis. But for those who have severe type of osteoarthritis when pain is just hard to endure and no amount of medicine can ease it, surgery may be the answer, a hip replacement surgery to be exact in which a hip prosthesis is embedded. But just like other operations complications set in.

Patients complained about pain, swelling, and metallosis or metal poisoning. Metallosis occurs when metal fragments from metal-on-metal hip implants may seep into the bloodstream of the recipient. Others even filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of these hip prostheses. To know more about the problems related to hip replacement operations, click here.
